DR. TIMOTHY DEWITT is adjunct professor at West Virginia University where he teaches brass pedagogy. For many years he was professor of music at Alderson Broaddus University where he taught high and low brass, music listening and analysis, conducting and brass pedagogy. Under his direction the Alderson Broaddus Brass became a regionally recognized ensemble, having toured primarily the Eastern United States and Canada, but also undertaking European travel to Austria, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

Formerly a member of the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra (1985-2002), Dr. DeWitt has also performed with the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, the Bedford Springs Festival Orchestra, the Garrett Lakes Arts Festival’s Symphony at Deep Creek, the West Virginia Symphonette and the Tower Brass Quintet.

Honors include being named Alderson Broaddus’s Outstanding Faculty of the Year (2006), having an endowed music scholarship established in his name, and having the brass studio at Alderson Broaddus named after him by virtue of generous alumni gifting to the university. (Of special honor was a piece commissioned by his students in honor of his departed golden retriever, Barclay.)

Professor DeWitt’s studio has produced named semi-finalists and winners in state, regional and national chamber and solo music competitions, some of whom were accepted and awarded assistantships for graduate study at major music schools throughout the United States. Former students hold collegiate and public school teaching positions throughout the eastern United States and Canada, some having performed with such prestigious ensembles as the River City Brass Band, The Brass Roots, the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, the Miami Symphony Orchestra, the Richmond Philharmonic Orchestra, the Westmoreland Symphony, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, the Army Blues and other numerous United States’ military bands who have performed throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.

Dr. DeWitt received his Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Performance and Literature (Trumpet) from the Eastman School of Music, studying under Charles Geyer, Edwin Betts and Roger Sherman. He also holds a Master of Music Degree in Performance from Bowling Green State University and a Bachelor of Music Degree in Applied Music from West Virginia University. Additionally, Professor DeWitt studied conducting under clinicians Stephen Peterson, formerly of Ithaca College, and Mallory Thompson of Northwestern University as a participant of the Northeast Wind Conducting Symposium. He is also an active adjudicator for the National Trumpet Competition.
