Three in One
Three in One is a collection of variation sets on three well-known hymn tunes—Gaudeamus Pariter, In Babilone, and Adoro Te Devote. These melodies, widely recognized across various religious traditions, are often reduced to mundane congregational singing. This collection seeks to restore their vitality with wit, brilliance, and stylistic diversity, ranging from contemplative to pompous, and incorporating forms such as waltzes, marches, and gigues.
This collection also draws inspiration from the piano variations of Wolfgang Amadeus
Mozart, incorporating hallmark features of the Classical era. These include minor-mode
variations, alterations in meter, expressive Adagio variations, and a focus on grace and
simplicity in musical texture. Each set also features a quodlibet variation—a playful musical mashup that intertwines the hymn tune with another melody.
These variation sets are well-suited for concert performance, selective use in worship
services, and, most importantly, for personal enjoyment at home. Performers are encouraged to omit, rearrange, or adapt variations to suit their preferences.
Above all, it is the author’s hope that these pieces inspire reflection on the boundless
possibilities of music and bring endless enjoyment through the Three in One.
